Photography found Errol Daniels in the ‘60s while he worked in the Civil Rights Movement in Chicago. He found himself particularly drawn to social documentary photography because it provides him access to the daily lives, cultures, traditions, and events that shape the lives of his subjects. Errol began to lose the use of his hands due to motor neuron disease in the 1980’s and was forced to stop shooting. A decade later, Errol’s love for the camera was rekindled as he adapted to his disability through the diligent work of physical and occupational therapists. During the 1990s, Errol studied with photographers such as Amy Arbus, John Goodman, and Stephen Shames to further develop his craft and style of social documentation. Errol’s clients include Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Summit Educational Resources, and Weinberg Campus. He recently completed a project with Judge Robert Russell, presiding Judge of the Buffalo, NY Mental Health and Drug Court System. The project tells the story of this worthwhile program. In 1973 I was working in a portrait and wedding photography studio when my cousin asked me to take some photographs for him. I took a day off and went to the Elizabeth Public Library where there had been a fire, causing extensive smoke damage throughout the building. My cousin owned Cranes Professional Cleaners, a company started by our grandfather as a furniture refinishing business in East Orange, New Jersey. His son, my uncle, started doing appraisal work for insurance companies and my cousin Charles started the fire and smoke restoration business as an extension of the appraisal work. One day, Chuck suggested that as a professional photographer, I might be interested in specializing in photography for insurance losses. I quit my job, rode around the state with him photographing fire losses, and sold the photos to the insurance adjusters. Wide-Angle Photographic began in the basement of my mothers house, eventually moved to real office space, and became Garden State Legal Photo Service, serving carriers as well as plaintiff and defense attorneys. I have the most uninteresting bio that you could imagine. I went to college and then got married and have two kids and a dog. My older son has tropical fish. I dont go on exotic trips to Africa or Yellowstone to take pictures. I take pictures of things I encounter every day. These are mostly rural scenes from upstate New York. Ive been taking pictures since I was in high school. I put myself through college doing photography and printing pictures. That was fun. After college the job and kids came along so I didnt do any professional photography until the kids got a little older. I was too busy chasing them around. I started the photos of Ellicottville after I walked through Ellicottville and noticed that there were very little art that depicted the village. So I made my own pictures, showed them to some people, and they were well received. If you click on the Local Sports link you will find lots of pictures of football, soccer, and such. Thats because of the kids. I photograph their games and post the pictures so that their friends (and their friends parents) can have pictures of the game. Its just for the fun of it. I also photography weddings and portraits. I dont have a studio because I believe that portraits shouldnt just be a picture of your head and shoulders -- they should tell something about you such as where you work or play -- so I pack up my equipment and take it to you. Your photography session will conveniently take place in your home, yard, or other favorite outdoor location. Please allow about 1 ½ to 2 hours for your session to take place. I do portraiture all year, so you have a choice of two session styles: Studio style portraiture or natural light photography. Studio style is when I bring the studio to you. I will need a space (such as in a living room) to set up my equipment. Natural light portraiture can take place indoors (providing there is ample light) or outdoors when weather permits. Within about 5 days, I will contact you when your finished images are ready to view. Your portraits will be displayed in a private online gallery. Your gallery will stay up on my server for 3 days to allow plenty of time to review and share with family and friends.
