The first lines of furniture were for director’s chairs for the western J.C. Penny stores. Then some beach chairs and chaises. Some other local furniture stores wanted us to make dining chairs for them. After some arguing over exclusivity, we opened our factory to the public and Autumn Furniture was born. We offered simple dining tables and chairs and coffee and end tables. A partnership was started with a company in Denver who made the guts to sofas and loveseats. A trade was made so that we made arms for the sofas and they made the guts. We traded work and both sold the end products. As business grew, a new, larger factory was needed and we found an old rodeo barn on the south side of Albuquerque. The bootjack business flourished and the retail space grew to showcase all of our growing lines of furniture luding entertainment centers, bedroom furniture, and office furniture. In order to offer our furniture more close to the center of Albuquerque, we opened a retail store at 7004 Menaul, east of Louisiana (next door to Midas). We stayed there for years when we needed more space. Our Santa Fe showroom opened in XXX and after a relocation, moved to XXX Cerrillos Rd. We moved to 4636 Menaul and opened a new Leather Gallery as well as the first Closet Interiors venture. Function…Form…Beauty. Function, or purpose, is the bedrock of my design process. Then, my imagination is free to explore forms in which to house the function, drawing inspiration from many sources: nature, architecture, historic furniture styles (pripally Japanese, Arts and Crafts, and Shaker styles), and, for custom pieces, the client's intended space for the finished piece. Throughout the design process and even during construction I try to remain always open to inspiration and serendipity (odds and ends in the scrap box, a wrong cut, a song from the radio…). My goal is elegance, simplicity in appearance, focusing attention on the form and the materials. I lude small details to emphasize the design and the wood: the shape of a leg, the diamond pin through the hidden tenon, a book-matched panel. I want the viewer to see and appreciate something new each time he or she looks at the piece. Still, the object must anticipate and address every need of the user in a comfortable and easy manner. The talent of three brothers goes into each piece of furniture produced at Great Southwest Furniture Design in Albuquerque. There's Julian Reyes, who designs and painstakingly carves his New Mexican-style tables, chairs beds and media cabinets for walk-in and custom clients. There's Humberto, who takes care of the business end of the company at Candelaria NE. And there's Gabriel, who manages the wood shop. Together the brothers have been in business for seven years, first in Tijeras as Route 66 Design and now in the heights as great southwest for the past year. Twelve years ago, the three emigrated to Albuquerque from Torreon, Mexico, to join relatives who lived here. A glance through their Great Southwest showroom reveals elaborately carved sugar pine furniture in classic New Mexican style. Massive media centers with painted accents sit next to towering canopy beds and low broad tables. Styles come painted in red, green or antiqued paint accents or finished in honey colored stain. The detailed carving is perhaps the most eye-catching feature of Julian Reyes' work. It can take him as long as a day to carve a single leg for a table. His tools are pretty basic---a table saw, joiner, shapers and sanders. He says he taught himself the trade and the New Mexican style years ago. Customers can either come to Great Southwest and buy furniture off the floor or order it specially made, said Reyes, who does the consulting with the customers.
