Abington Art Center originated as the Old York Road Art Guild. The Guild was founded in 1939 by a group of visionary women who believed in the benefit of cultural enrichment for individual and community life to be derived from creative artistic expression. In 1965, the Guild’s educational programs were incorporated as a separate non-profit under the name Abington Art Center. Several years later, on Christmas Day 1969, respected rare book and print collector, Lessing J. Rosenwald and his wifeh, donated their elegant estate, Alverthorpe Manor to the Township of Abington as a cultural and recreational gathering place for the community. Guild members had supported acceptance of the gift which offered the opportunity to expand their program of studio art instruction and exhibitions at the Manor. Soon after moving to Alverthorpe Manor, the organization made the transition to a professionally managed institution with its first paid director and the Guild was disbanded. In 1981, when the Rosenwald Collection was moved to the Library of Congress and National Gallery in Washington, D. C. , the Art Center was able to expand into the former gallery wing of the Manor, doubling its instruction space and enrollment. Since then, the Art Center has continued to grow, establishing a nationally recognized Sculpture Garden in 1990, strengthening its exhibition programs and resources, and enlarging its community outreach efforts. At the heart of the shop is a cozy dining area replete with a 1910 baby grand piano, pieces of salvaged Victorian architecture and other classic and antique accoutrements. Miss Martha’s Tea Room is located in historic downtown Scottsdale, in the building which once housed the old Porter & Stoner Dry Goods and Grocery Store. Its history stretches back to 1899, and Porter & Stoner served the community for more than three decades. In the mid 1930s, Cecil Echard remodelled the building and operated a restaurant for the next thirty years. Eck’s Restaurant occupied the building until 1961. After a few years of vacancy, Provident Bookstore operated a religious bookstore in the building from 1964 into the new century. Today this venerable old building has a new look and a bright new future as the home of Miss Martha’s Tea Room & Gifts. Miss Martha’s Tea Room & Gifts is the fulfilled dream of owner Marty Savanick, who has always loved antiques, collectibles, and making people happy. Her first entrepreneurial venture came in 1989 with opening of Collections by Marty in Scottdale. Following this success, Marty opened a second, larger store along Route 31 in Donegal, one well positioned to take advantage of tourist traffic through the Laurel Highlands and to Seven Springs. But as her businesses grew, Marty always harboured the dream of opening a Tea Room, at first thinking the new enterprise could be a part of Collections by Marty. But when the old Provident Book Store in Scottdale became available, Marty knew the time for her Tea Room had come at last. Today, the entire family is involved in running Marty’s ventures, including sons Benjamin, Nathan, and Adam. Marty is far from having run out of ideas. Seven dining rooms are being restored on the second floor, perfect for Bridge clubs, Christmas parties, and small, elegant get-togethers.
